A Report on Adult Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Need (2022)

New research into two vital questions for the field:

– What barriers do people face when they want to access a course?
– What barriers do providers face in offering courses?

Vanessa and Robin will present the Reading Writing Hotline current research on barriers for providers in offering courses and for people accessing classes.

Meet Vanessa Iles
Vanessa Iles is an experienced LLN practitioner and manager of the Reading Writing Hotline, She coordinates a database of LLN providers around the country and manages a team of experienced teachers who field enquiries from individuals, organisations and industry seeking referrals and assistance to access literacy and numeracy classes. Vanessa also coordinates several strategic improvement projects, including a national survey of adult literacy, numeracy and digital need and demand, engagement with First Nations communities and resource development.

Robin is the founder and Director of Social Equity Works. Established in 2021 Social Equity Works conducts social research, evaluation, capacity building and strategy development for government, not-for-profit and for purpose organisations. Robin has special interest in supporting small and medium services NFPs with capacity building. She is a member of the Australasian Evaluation Society. Robin was the Manager of TAFE NSW Women’s Program Unit from 2000 – 2009 and has a strong commitment to improving public education outcomes.
Social Equity Works is currently researching the impact of COVID-19 on staff wellbeing in the community sector for NCOSS and is working with the Reading Writing Hotline on their Community Engagement Strategy. The team have just completed a consultation with Arabic speaking parents of children with asthma for Asthma Australia and are in the final stages of Strategic Planning with the Refugee Welcome Centre (Rozelle).
In 2019 Robin established and still co-coordinates a community choir in Redfern Waterloo and she is the current Chair of the Settlement Neighbourhood Centre Board.
