Rather, most are distributed across participants and emerge as a result of the everyday demands of life and work. Most people with low literacy are surrounded by friends, neighbours, workmates and confidantes and they lean into these networks to survive in increasingly textually dense and technologically complex\u00a0environments. In this webinar, Sally Thompson will discuss recently completed ethnographic research about literacy meditation\u00a0and the role of literacy mediators. Her research\u00a0identifies the central role of community\u00a0based organisations in providing literacy mediation for people with low literacy whose communities are made up of other non-readers. She will argue the case for an &#8216;ecology&#8217; of literacy pedagogies in order to allow people with low literacy to pursue lives of dignity and autonomy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Sally Thompson<\/strong><br \/>Dr Sally Thompson has worked in and around adults with low literacy for many decades through policy, research, advocacy and project management in government, Higher Education, TAFE, union and community sectors.\u00a0 She is a former President of VALBEC, CEO of Adult Learning Australia and Victorian ACFE Board member.
